The Insider's Guide to Buying a New Car Without Getting Taken for a Ride

DIY new-car buying guide

Learn how to buy and negotiate a new car.
Use the process from the other side of the desk.

Dealer Defense is a practical new-car buying guide built around the process I would personally use to research, negotiate and purchase a new vehicle. It walks you through the transaction step by step so you can understand the numbers, create competition between dealerships and make a more informed decision.

The dealership has a process.
Now you have one too.
What you'll learn

A step-by-step new-car buying process.

Buying a new vehicle involves much more than asking a dealer for their best monthly payment. The Dealer Defense guide breaks the transaction into separate steps so you can understand what you're negotiating and why.

Budgeting and financing preparation

Learn how to prepare before contacting dealerships, including budgeting, financing preapproval and understanding what you can realistically afford.

Vehicle research and target pricing

Understand how to research the vehicle, compare available inventory and build a realistic pricing strategy before negotiations begin.

Dealer competition

Learn how to contact multiple dealerships and use competing offers to create leverage instead of relying on one dealer's initial proposal.

Trade-in strategy

Learn how to think about your trade separately from the new-car purchase so the numbers remain easier to evaluate.

Financing and dealership paperwork

Understand how financing, optional products and dealership paperwork can affect the final transaction.

Final review and delivery

Learn what to verify before signing so the final paperwork matches the deal you believe you negotiated.

Why I wrote Dealer Defense

Most buyers negotiate cars only occasionally. Dealerships do it every day.

I spent years selling vehicles inside dealerships. That experience showed me how much of the car-buying process feels confusing simply because consumers don't deal with it very often.

You don't need tricks. You need a process.

Dealer Defense was written to give buyers a repeatable system for approaching a new-car purchase. The goal isn't to convince you that every dealership is trying to take advantage of you or that every vehicle has thousands of dollars of hidden profit.

The goal is to help you understand the transaction, create real competition, separate the major pieces of the deal and make decisions based on the numbers instead of dealership pressure.

How to negotiate a new car

Negotiate the transaction, not just the payment.

Start with the vehicle price
Understand the selling price before allowing trade value, financing or monthly payment discussions to blur the numbers.
Create competition
Multiple dealerships competing for the same purchase can give you more useful information than repeatedly negotiating against yourself at one store.
Understand incentives
Manufacturer rebates and financing programs can materially change the economics of a new-car transaction.
Evaluate fees and add-ons
Look beyond the advertised vehicle price and understand what is being added to the final purchase agreement.
Keep the trade separate
Treating the trade-in as its own part of the deal can make the actual purchase price easier to evaluate.
Review before signing
Compare the final buyer's order and financing documents with the transaction you negotiated before completing the purchase.
